We have seen a lot of beautiful churches in Latin America but Las Lajas Sanctuary really stands out. Even for us, who are not super enthused about visiting church architecture anymore (there are just so many!), agree that there is something special about this one. If you find yourself in Ipiales near the border between Colombia and Ecuador, it is definitely worth a visit.
The Sanctuary is literally built into the river canyon. The rock cliff is the back wall of the church. Supposedly the image of Virgin Mary is visible on the rock, and that was the reason the church was built here in the first place.
Look at the detail on these one-piece wooden doors.
We visited Las Lajas on “border day”, and used it as a rest stop before entering Ecuador. We reluctantly left Boquia and drove through southern Colombia in just a few days because there is still so much left to explore. What is ahead may be not what we are hoping for, or maybe it will blow our mind. But that’s all part of the wonders of traveling. For now, adios Colombia!
Here are our last couple days in Colombia before crossing the border….
